Louisiana SPCA resumes providing animal control services for New Orleans

The SPCA has furnished the services for more than 60 years, but the two sides recently broke off talks on a new agreement because the organization said it could not provide services for the $1.7 million the city was offering in 2011.

Under the new agreement, the city has agreed to increase that figure to $1.92 million.
"This is a big win for the residents and animals of New Orleans," Landrieu said. "As was done with so many other contracts, our negotiations have been guided by my fiduciary responsibility to secure quality services for a price the city can afford. The LA/SPCA has been providing quality animal control and enforcement services for decades. As great community partners, their board, volunteers and donors have stepped up. We are pleased to have a fiscally responsible agreement in place for the next four years."
"The LA/SPCA is nationally recognized for the standards we set in animal care and sheltering," said Ana Zorrilla, CEO of the LA/SPCA. "We look forward to continuing these high quality services our citizens have come to expect for the animals of New Orleans."
Under the new agreement, the LA/SPCA will be paid $160,000 per month, or $1.92 million annually, for full animal control services, with annual consumer price index adjustments each January.
The services include:
  • Stray animal trapping, collection, and sheltering
  • Disaster and hurricane assistance
  • Bite case response and quarantine
  • Enforcement of the city's intact dog ordinance
  • Inspection of stables for mules used to pull carriages
  • Owner-requested relinquishment of animals in the field
  • Lost and found services
  • Adoption services for cats and dogs
  • Humane euthanasia and cremation for unadoptable animals
The services resumed on Monday, the city said.

'The Cape' Moves To Monday; 'Harry's Law' Premieres; Guess The Ratings

After a six week new episode layoff, NBC’s Chuck returns with a new episode tonight (and as Robert noted, our site traffic returns tomorrow morning).

Chuck faces new episode competition on broadcast (except for the CW), although ABC has The Bachelor instead of Dancing with the Stars. On cable, Monday Night Football is absent for the rest of the television season. Chuck drew adults 18-49 ratings of 1.8, 1.7, and 2.0 in its last three original episodes.

How well will it return tonight?

The Cape moves to its regular Monday 9pm timeslot. Its double episode Sunday premiere 8 days ago averaged a 2.6 rating.

How does it fare tonight?

The premiere of Harry’s Law enters the fray at 10pm against a new episode of Hawaii Five-0 and a Castle repeat on broadcast. The last three new episodes of Chase in that time slot scored a 1.4, 1.6 and 1.5 adults 18-49 rating. Can David E. Kelley and Kathy Bates reverse NBC’s fortunes in that hour?

How well will it premiere?

Mini Biography

Halle Berry was born on August 14, 1966 in Cleveland, Ohio, USA to African American father Jerome Berry, a former hospital attendant, and Caucasian mother Judith Berry, a retired psychiatric nurse. Halle also has an older sister named Heidi Berry. Halle first came into the spotlight at 17 years old when she won the Miss Teen All-American Pageant, representing the state of Ohio in 1985 and, a year later in 1986, when she was the first runner-up in the Miss USA Pageant. After participating in the pageant, Halle became a model. It eventually led to her first weekly TV series, 1989's "Living Dolls" (1989), where she soon gained a reputation for her on-set tenacity, preferring to "live" her roles and remaining in character even when the cameras stopped rolling. It paid off though when she reportedly refused to bathe for several days before starting work on her role as a crack addict in Spike Lee's Jungle Fever (1991) because the role provided her big screen breakthrough. The following year, she was cast as Eddie Murphy's love interest in Boomerang (1992), one of the few times that Murphy was evenly matched on screen. In 1994, Berry gained a youthful following for her performance as sexy secretary "Sharon Stone" in The Flintstones (1994). She next had a highly publicized costarring role with Jessica Lange in the adoption drama Losing Isaiah (1995). Though the movie received mixed reviews, Berry didn't let that slow her down, and continued down her path to super-stardom. In 1998, she received critical success when she starred as a street smart young woman who takes up with a struggling politician in Warren Beatty's Bulworth (1998). The following year, she won even greater acclaim for her role as actress Dorothy Dandridge in made-for-cable's Introducing Dorothy Dandridge (1999) (TV), for which she won a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a TV Movie/Mini-Series. In 2000, she received box office success in X-Men (2000) in which she played "Storm", a mutant who has the ability to control the weather.

Personal Quotes

On Dorothy Dandridge: "...You have to find a way to be sad on every day, in every scene, in every moment. And always try to hide the sadness. And (then) you'll get the essence of who she was."

"This moment is so much bigger than me, This moment is for Dorothy Dandridge, Lena Horne, Diahann Carroll... It's for the women that stand beside me, Jada Pinkett Smith, Angela Bassett, Vivica A. Fox... and it's for every nameless, faceless woman of color that now has a chance, because the door tonight has been opened." - During her Oscar acceptance speech.

On choosing both serious and popcorn-movie roles: "There's art and there's commerce. You have to find a way to mesh the two. It's important to do the little movies just for the love of the art. But it's those big movies that take you around the world and make you globally famous."

I'll never get married again, and I always hate to say never to anything, but I will never marry again.

I was black growing up in an all-white neighborhood, so I felt like I just didn't fit in. Like I wasn't as good as everybody else, or as smart, or whatever.

Blackness is a state of mind and I identify with the black community. Mainly, because I realized, early on, when I walk into a room, people see a black woman, they don't see a white women. So out of that reason alone, I identify more with the black community.

I spent a lot of time with a crown on my head.

The worst thing a man can ever do is kiss me on the first date.

I don't see a white woman. I see a black woman, even though my mother is white [her father Jerome is black]. Knowing that has made my life easier, I think.

I want to be the next Spike Lee. I want to help other black folks to get into Hollywood and be successful in Hollywood.

What is my real purpose here? I've looked at what I do. I make believe and make movies. I entertain people and get paid for it. Sometimes it seems like such a shallow existence. How insignificant in the scheme of life.

"When I was a kid, my mother told me that if you could not be a good loser, then there's no way you could be a good winner. And I hope to God I never see these people again." - on accepting her Razzie Award for Worst Actress

I never wanted to be a model. My modeling career was nothing but a stepping stone to my acting career and that's all I ever saw it as. A pointless rock in the river that has to be stepped on in order to get to the meaningful oasis of acting.

I guess you could say I have bad taste in men. But I no longer feel the need to be someone's wife.

(On receiving a film festival award while pregnant) I am three times the girl I used to be. This is the second red carpet where I didn't have to think about sucking in my stomach - because I can't!

You think you know what love is - until you have a child and discover that unconditional mother love.

I once was stupid enough to say, in a previous relationship, 'I'm going to be with this person forever,' and realised, as I grew, that I don't know if forever is possible.

340-Year-Old Bible Found in Wisconsin Church

340-year-old Bible was discovered in a Wisconsin church last week, according to local reports.

At the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bonduel, Wisc., the Bible was discovered after being tucked away in a kitchen pantry that was rarely used and had stored away old books and texts for decades, WSAW Channel 7 reported. The book was stashed away in a safe in the pantry.

"We don't know how we got it. We don't know how it got into the safe. We've been asking some of our elderly folks and people in the nursing home and nobody seems to remember," Rev. Timothy Shoup from St. Paul Lutheran Church told the news station.

Last year, a teacher came across the Bible and showed it to Shoup. The reverend added up the Bible's Roman numerals to 1670, but he thought that he must have miscalculated.

The hand-pressed Bible is not from the United States, but was printed in Nuremberg, Germany.

According to WFRV Channel 5, the Bible is still in excellent condition despite its age. The church will take special measures to preserve it even better for the future.

"It's amazing," Rev. Shoup told Channel 5. "I mean the pages are crisp. It's not like stuff is falling all apart. A couple of the pages are loose but it's in nice condition."

The book does not only feature text, but also detailed illustrations.

"Each time I see an illustration like this, I just think of how beautiful it looks and how much of a labor of love it must have been for the person who actually drew it," Lyle Buettner, a worker with the Special Collections at Concordia Seminary Library, told Fox Channel 11.

President Obama in Primetime for Tucson Memorial

It was set visit day yesterday, with a group excursion to the sets of Lopez Tonight, Conan, Cougar Town, Parks and Recreation and Criminal Minds spin-off Criminal Minds. The morning began on the Warner Bros. lot set of Lopez Tonight with George Lopez and new executive producer Bob Morton, who had the following to say about season two:”
“I think when the show started, it was approached more as a talk show, and we basically said we wanted to do comedy, especially with Conan coming on. So we pretty much just refocused everything. The comedy pieces we’ve made, I think, are a lot stronger, a lot quicker-paced, as is the overall pace of the show. Before I was here they were going a little longer. And the one thing I learned — one of many things that I learned from David Letterman – was these things have to have a sense of urgency. And that feeling of the live show just creates an energy that you can’t get any way else.”

Next up was Conan’s new talker, with Conan O’Brien and executive producer Jeff Ross. Said Conan about working for TBS:
“I came to this show thinking I just want to go for it in every single way creatively, and I don’t want to over-think things. If someone has an idea and it sounds like, gee, I haven’t seen that before, we try it. And what’s nice is we are partnered with people who have encouraged us since day one. The people at TBS have made it very clear that we want you to do what you think is funny and what you enjoy doing, and I think that’s led to a feeling here of experimentation in silliness.

The crew, the staff, a lot of the people in their early twenties who are working on the show, we’ve all been through something in the last year, and so there’s sort of a spirit. There’s a little pirate-ship feeling to this show, which I love. Everybody has it because we all went through it. None of us knew what was going to happen, were we going to get other jobs, how were we going to make it through this thing. We stuck together. We did. And that creates a real strong dynamic here at the show that I think is coming through on television.”
After a short bus trip to the Twentieth Century Fox lot, there were two sessions: Funny Women session with Julie Bowen, Alyson Hannigan, Jane Lynch, Lea Michele, Martha Plimpton, Cobie Smulders and Sofia Vergara; and Funny Men session with Ty Burrell, Chris Colfer, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Neil Patrick Harris, Matthew Morrison, Eric Stonestreet, Ed O’Neill, Josh Radnor, Jason Segal and Lucas Neff. And set visits to Cougar Town, Parks and Recreation and Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior capped off the day.
